About the AME
John J. Schmidt, MD, FAA Aviation Medical Examiner #20277

Dr. Schmidt is a board certified dermatologist and a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. He is also board certified in Internal Medicine. He has been a designated AME since 1997.
He was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended public schools. He graduated from Drexel University with a B.S. in Civil Engineering with emphasis in environmental engineering. He received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine. After graduation from medical school, he completed a full 3 year residency in Internal Medicine at Brown University-Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, Rhode Island. He then served his country for 2 years as a commissioned medical officer, rank Lt. Commander, in the United States Public Health Service, stationed on the Navajo and Hopi Indian Reservations at Tuba City, Arizona. Following his tour of duty Dr. Schmidt went on to complete a 3 year Dermatology residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania located in Philadelphia. Dr. Schmidt is an active private pilot based at KPUB.
Airman medical exams are conducted at 525 Skyway, Pueblo, CO 81001, sharing the office with Senior AME Dr. Limoge.
Dr. Schmidt is presently authorized to perform 1st, 2nd, and 3rd class medical exams. Basic med is also an option.
Airmen must first fill out form 8500-8 on https://medxpress.faa.gov and bring to exam their confirmation # and (if possible) a printout of the form 8500-8.
